Belgian Shepherd Malinois

The Belgian Shepherd Malinois is a breed that delights dog lovers all over the world with its elegance, strength and exceptional intelligence. They are often found alongside police officers, soldiers or rescue workers, as they are known for their loyalty, fearlessness and working enthusiasm. With the right owner, the Malinois also becomes an invaluable family member - alert, loving and always ready for action.

Basic characteristics of the breed

  • Coat: short, double, waterproof

  • Color: brown to red with a black mask

  • Lifespan: 10–14 years

  • Hair loss: minimal

  • Litter: average 6–10 pups

Character and temperament

The Malinois is a dog with a strong character that requires consistent and confident leadership. It is protective, loyal and very attached to its human. Due to its intelligence, it learns quickly and is an excellent watchdog, but it is only suitable for active owners who can provide it with enough exercise and mental challenges.

  • extremely teachable and dedicated,

  • requires a lot of activity and work,

  • protective of his family,

  • requires consistent upbringing and socialization.

Activity and movement

The Malinois is not suitable for people looking for a calm dog. It needs daily physical and mental exercise:

  • long walks and runs (at least 1–2 hours a day),

  • sports such as agility, object search, defense,

  • free movement in a safe environment.

It thrives best with a person who takes it with them everywhere – from running, hiking to playing outdoors.

Care and health

Grooming is easy – weekly brushing and occasional bathing are sufficient. The breed is generally healthy, but watch out for hip and elbow dysplasia and eye disease .

Living space and family

Although the Malinois can live outside, it is emotionally attached to its human and needs daily interaction. It does well in a house with a garden or a larger apartment, as long as the owner provides it with enough exercise.

It is suitable for:

  • experienced owners,

  • active individuals and families with older children,

  • people who want a dog for sports, work, and loyal companionship.

Not suitable for:

  • complete beginners with no experience,

  • families with very young children,

  • people looking for a calm pet.
